FIREWISE USA
The NFPA Firewise USA recognition program was designed to help people learn about wildfire and how they can make their homes and neighborhoods safer. The Oaks Neighborhood Association is proud to team up with MySafe:LA to create a 3-year action plan to reduce our shared risk and to create an ignition-resistant community.

As we move through our action plan, we will focus on specific areas of home hardening, providing information and resources below.

Being a Firewise community MAY mean a discount on your property insurance. Every insurance company has different requirements, so be sure to check with your company. Click on the link above to find the PDF of our official Oaks Firewise Community Certificate.
We ask that neighbors document their improvements along the way using the form below. This is an important step, as we must show the FireWise administrator that we are making progress.

VENTS
One of the three most common ways homes ignite and burn during wildfires is by embers entering the home through vents. During a wildfire, embers are carried by wind and can travel for miles, well ahead of the main flame front. If these embers enter unprotected attic, crawl space, or foundation vents, they can ignite combustible materials like insulation, dust, or stored items within the home. Covering vents with fine, metal screens is a critical fire prevention measure.
02
BRUSH CLEARANCE
Brush clearance is critical for wildfire prevention because it removes fuel, creates a "defensible space" around structures for firefighters, slows fire spread, and reduces the risk from flying embers.

03

FIRE RETARDANT PAINT
As wildfires continue to threaten communities throughout California and other fire-prone regions of the United States, homeowners are looking for practical ways to improve the fire resistance of their properties. While no paint can make a home completely fireproof, specialized fire-retardant coatings can provide an additional layer of protection that may help slow the spread of flames and reduce fire damage.
